July 1, 1847
On July 1, 1847 the United States Post Office Department issued it’s first stamps, a 5 cent depicting Benjamin Franklin and a 10 cent with George Washington. These early issues are highly collectible and very few Post Offices in Virginia received these stamps. Richmond was among one of the larger Post offices in Virginia that received supplies. This cover is canceled with a red Richmond circular date stamp dated July 6, (1850) and the stamp is canceled with the 7 bar grid.
